"Anthems For The Banned"

I had a thought a few moments ago that sorta stunned me.... I was staring into the

Toshiba abyss that is my laptop, and I started thinking about different points in the

musical timeline, and how it seems that each generation has had songs that were

"THEIRS". You know, there's always gonna be that guy that walks up to you at a

bar or a party and screams "I wanna rock" in the Dee Snider voice.

They identify SO much with a certain song that it becomes their song. This has

always been a great strength in country music writing, but not as much the case

in rock. But there are those brilliant few.... "We are the champions", hell, "I got

friends in low places" even though it's country - it's a countrified bar room rock

and roll band song. Anybody could play that song and people would love it.

Hell, I bet Poten-C could record a hip hop version and people would go apeshit.

There's your challenge, bitch!

I mean, wait.... Hip Hop is my shit, dog..............................

I hope he don't come and bust a cap in me now....

No, for real though, Poten-C is awesome. I had my doubts about him and heard a lot of talk about people seeing him perform live early on. I'll be honest. I am impressed. That dude's got some skills... And I hate rap. With very few exceptions, and I like his stuff... I'd like to lay down some bad-ass guitar riffs for him and have him lay some sick shit down over it.

Kudos to you my friend. You rock.

Back on topic:

Ok, so this whole mess got me thinking, "What's my song?" And..............Uh....... I can't think of one.

Where oh where is my anthem? Someone, anyone, help me.... Tell me yours!

I have a theory, and I want to test it. I will reveal the results if and when I got enough responses from you loyal readers out there.....

So please, leave comments... Tell me your anthem. ONLY ONE. And if you wouldn't mind, please leave your age... or a close approximation thereof. It's part of my theory.

Anyway, when this is all done, I'll list the top 20 songs, and we can all make a lovely playlist, and cruise around town in all our b.p. glory rocking out to the anthems of the banned generation.

Sounds fun....

This is a tough one, but I remember as a teenager (I'm 29), I loved the RATM song "Bullet In Your Head" (I think was the name of it)....haha, not cause I wanted to shoot someone, but because of the lyrics "Fuck you I won't do what you tell me" that was repeated over and over several times. It was a great 'rebellion' song. To the 'establishment', to the 'man', to 'parents' - FUCK YOU I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME! haha

    Now I'm a responsible adult. Wonder what the hell happened? lol

  2. Brock - I understand your frustration. However, consider the ShowMe Center does not exist as a music venue. It is a multipurpose venue. They have no charter to serve the music community, and in fact promoting concerts is a risky business. This state owned facility is not in the business of taking unnecessary risks - your tax dollars fund the place. Regarding Mr. Ross, while I know him only casually, I do know he has served as the president of IAAM (International Association of Assembly Managers) and has managed to keep the place in the black all these years. Why should Mr. Ross be fired just because some handful of disgruntled local musicians don't care for the concert calendar? The place makes money on gun shows, car shows, and concession sales at sporting events. It's not a concert venue.

    Again, I totally understand your frustration, but railing against SMC and calling out David Ross over the lack of concerts will not accomplish anything.

    And no, the River Campus will probably never promote rock concerts because that's not what the place is for.

    If you want to cause positive change, spend your energy where it might actually get something done. Both of these avenues are a dead end for your cause.

    If you are so certain of your talents and abilities, why don't YOU assume the risk of renting one of these venues to promote a show? Do that, and you have something to build on. Otherwise, your comments fall on the community ears at large as mostly sour grapes.

    IOW do something about it, rather than just bitching about it. Everyone has complaints but it appears no one is willing to step up to the plate.

  3. You know, I brought up Rage Fest, but the more logical choice should be Real Rock 99.3. Why have they never put together a big show?

    And if Rage plays local music, why won't Real Rock? I'd much rather hear a good local band than the F'n Scorpions 10 times a day.

    There you go Real Rock. Ban The Scorpions and in their place, play a local band every time.

    While I am rambling, let me just add, I think there are a few really great bands around here that get out and play often, and seem to draw a good crowd.

    So when you come back at me with the "Yeah, we have a great scene because of blah blah blah" just know that I know that, and what I am saying is, go to a big town.

    How many bands are playing in St.Louis on any given night. Sure, we're no St.Louis, but we should have the option to see a band every night of the week if we choose. Not just Thursday thru Sunday.

    How many bands in this town would play on a Monday night? Gee, if you're the only band playing that night, chances are you'll get a nice crowd. Why do bands always want the weekend? Makes no sense to me.

    That's my point. We have a nice little "scene" here. But I don't want to be in a scene. I want to live in a music town. Why can I never go downtown and see a really great outlaw country band? Or a hip hop show?

    There's 2 groups of people you never see downtown much. Rednecks and "Urbans".

    They like to drink and have fun, too....

    In fact, I bet they'd outdrink any little frat boy any day of the week.

  4. That's what frats and sororities are for... They can raise all kinds of money... How about Bikini car washes for a start? HA HA.

    Get sponsors... Talk to PMAC, Shivelbines, etc....

    Look at who benefits, and seek them out.
